The Council’s Community Development Committee today agreed to support greater opportunities for members of the Tasman Youth Council to participate in local government meetings.
The first step will be for the Council to work with Community Boards and Community Associations towards offering youth councillors speaking rights at some meetings.
Community Development Committee chairman Peter Canton said the initiative would bring young people’s perspectives to the table, and give youth councillors the opportunity to develop governance skills.
“It will provide a pathway for young people who are interested in a career in government or politics a real opportunity to participate at the local level, gain a greater understanding of what’s involved, and develop skills in a supportive environment.”
Cr Canton said that, if successful, the initiative could be expanded to offer youth councillors speaking rights on Council committees, allowing them to act in an advisory role to Tasman District councillors.
“The ultimate aim of this initiative is to give our elected councillors a fresh insight into the issues that matter to our young people,” he said.
<h4>About the Tasman Youth Council</h4>
The Tasman Youth Council was established in 1998 after local young people told the Council they wanted to have their voices heard and their interests taken seriously.
There are four regional clusters - Waimea, Motueka, Golden Bay and Murchison. Each cluster carries out projects and initiatives relevant to the needs expressed by young people in their communities.
Youth councillors are offered youth leadership and development opportunities to help them fulfil their role.

With assistance from the Tasman Creative Communities Scheme, Arts Council Nelson [ACN] is installing a large format frame onto a wall on Queens Street (beside the Library entrance) and is looking to select six images to fill the frame, each for an eight-week period over the coming year.
ACN invites young people who live in the Tasman region (or who may attend a Tasman College) to email a photograph of up to three works they would like to enter. That is all you need to do and there is no entry fee!
Images should be in landscape format as the frame will be fixed. There is no ‘theme’ or size restrictions. Images can be in any medium or style as long as they are suitable to be photographed and reproduced in a large format print at our cost.
From the entries received, ACN shall select six pieces to go into the frame…
There are no prizes other than selected works being publicly profiled for a two month period, however selected artists shall be gifted the mounted large format print valued at $180 to own once it has been displayed.

<li>Images must be free of any copyright issues or others intellectual property rights.</li>
<li>Preferred entry is by email image less than 2mb. Please contact ACN on 03 5484640 if this is not possible for you for any reason and you arrange to have the original dropped off for inclusion in the selection process.</li>
<li>Ideally images will be in an ‘A’ size landscape format (A4, A3, A2, etc.) to enable images to be enlarged proportionally to fit the frame. Should an image be chosen that is not in this format ACN reserves the right to crop the work as required to fit.</li>
<li>The selection panel’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into</li>
<li>Images that may cause offence to anyone will be excluded</li>
<li>All entrants will be notified of the outcome before 31st March 2016.</li>
<li>Original work that is selected, must be available for photographing by ACN (unless a quality high resolution image can be supplied)</li>
<li>In the unlikely event that a print of selected work is irreparably damaged whilst on public display, ACN cannot be held liable for replacing the work for continued display or later gifting the work to the artist</li>
<li>In submitting work to this project, selected entrants understand and consent to their image being on public display for a two month period at any point over the next twelve months and possibly being reproduced for promotional purposes of this initiative.</li>

The Tasman Skatepark Tour 2016 edition concluded in spectacular fashion at Richmond on Saturday with a strong field of riders stomping trick after trick, much to the delight of the 200-strong audience.
The unstoppable Alex Moreu was once again in sublime form, and completed a clean sweep in the junior skate section. Reggie McDonald and Alex Scott continued their duel in the senior skate section, but this time it was Alex who prevailed. The field was particularly strong in the open skate section, and it was Ben Short who demonstrated a full arsenal of tricks to secure first place. 
Nikita Turu also showed why she was the most consistent scooter rider on tour, notching up her sixth straight victory. Blenheim’s Samuel Adcock was too good in the senior scooter section, with Blake Eden registering his third first placing in the open scooter section.
On the bike, it was Jye Wilson who nudged Korbyn Wilson off the top rung in the junior bmx, with Tom Basset-Eason massive airs in the senior bmx to claim his forth victory of the tour. Ryan Dando was the regular smooth operator we have come to expect, blowing away the competition in the open bmx, including an impressive series of tail whips.
So after six skateparks, 54 competition heats, 221 competitors and a heap of bails, rails, some fails but mostly prevails, here are the overall champions from the 2016 Tasman Skatepark Tour:

Brightwater's compact skatepark hosted heat five of the Tasman Skatepark Tour, and the condensed circuit called for innovation and creativity by all riders to navigate the park elements.
The unstoppable Alex Moreu notched up his fifth consecutive victory in the junior skate section, and is now in an unpassable position to claim the overall skate title with one heat still to come. Reggie McDonald fought off a bruised heel to claim the senior skate section, and local Brightwater man Tyler Hickmott stole the show in the open skate section.
Nikita Turu and Ryan McHugh both won their respective scooter heats, and are locked in a two-way race for the overall scooter championship. Mita Timpson was victorious in the open scooter section.
BMX front runner Korbyn Wilson was nudged off the top place podium in the junior bmx section by Taine Wastney. However, Korbyn is still number one on the on the leaderboard after claiming his fourth win in the open section. Ryan Dando is in second.
So it all comes down to the final heat in Richmond this Saturday, with action getting underway at 2pm, and three new shredders to be crowned 2016 Tasman Skatepark Tour Champions.

The airs were massive in Motueka as the skatepark turned into a launching pad for the young shredders to get airborne during the forth stop of the Tasman Skatepark Tour.
Alex Moreu continued his unbeaten run, winning the junior skate section and in doing so solidifying his position at the top of the skate leaderboard. Nanek Jeschke returned to the action and took out the senior skate section, with Richmond’s Matt Johnstone winning the open skate section.
Nikita Turu also continued her sublime form in the junior scooter section, picking up her fourth straight victory, and is now sitting in outright first place on the leaderboard. Thomas Nevin nudged fellow front runner Ryan McHugh to pick up first place in the senior scooter section with Mita Timpson too good for the competition in the open scooter section.
Motueka riders reigned supreme in all three bmx sections, with Korbyn Wilson (junior), Zephyr McGowan (senior) and Ryan Dando (open) victorious, much to the delight of the home crowd. 
The tour heads to Brightwater on Wednesday for stop number five with action getting underway at 5pm.

It was Tapawera’s turn to host the third stop of the Tasman Skatepark Tour, and with thunderstorms threatening there was an added edge as the competitors tried to get through the competition heats and accumulate championship leadership points.
The Moreu brothers continued their domination in the junior skate section, with young Alex stealing the show with a blunt rock-to-fakie that was enough to take out first place over older brother Sam. In the senior section, Alex Scott turned the tables on Reggie McDonald, picking up first place with a well-constructed routine that enabled him to dig deep into his bag of tricks.
Nikita Turu and Ryan McHugh took out their respective junior and senior heats in the scooter section, and are currently tied for first overall on the scooter leaderboard at the halfway point of the tour. Christchurch’s Fairmont Wiringi took out the open scooter heat with a never-seen-before backflip over the roller.
Korbyn Wilson and Tom Bassett-Eason rode uncontested in the junior and senior BMX heats and are also tied for first place overall on the championship leaderboard. An injured Ryan Dando still had enough in reserve to take out the open BMX section.
The tour winds back down the Motueka Valley and stops off at Motueka on Saturday for the fourth stop, with the competition getting underway from 2pm.

Both the junior and senior sections in each of the skate, bike and scooter categories followed an identical pattern to the tour opener in Mapua, with Alex Moreu and Nanek Jeschke (skate), Nikita Turu and Ryan McHugh (scooter), Korbyn Wilson and Tom Bassett-Eason (bmx) victorious in their respective heats. 
Blake Eden notched up another win in the open scooter heat, and also reigned supreme in the open bmx heat. Journeyman Chris Norris from England took out the Open skate category.
The tour traverses down the Motueka Valley and into Tapawera for the third instalment, which takes place this Wednesday (13 January) at 5pm.

The Tasman Skatepark Tour launched in 2016 in typical style, with a heap of insane airs, flips, spins and spills on show at Mapua last night. 
The regular posse of stalwart riders were back, plus a few new faces which made for a tight contest across all the categories.
Reigning supreme in the skate categories were Alex Moreu (Junior), Nanek Jeschke (Senior) and Oliver Jonsson (Open). Nikita Turu (Junior), Ryan McHugh (Senior) and Blake Eden (Open) dominated their respective scooter heats, with Korbyn Wilson (Junior), Tom Bassett-Eason (Senior) and Ryan Dando (Open) taking out the BMX categories. 
The tour embarks on a Golden Bay invasion this Saturday (2-4pm) with Takaka Skatepark hosting the 2nd stop on the circuit.
